Nights, rings & lights.

...12/26/01: Boxing Day in British areas; also the beginning of Kwanzaa, a 7-day event...12/28/01: the US special troops will lead a convoy heading to Jalalabad...alcohol intake does not increase during hard times, but wineries are going through hard times due to a reduction in sales in late 2001...both the New York Yankees & Mets will have new stadiums for 2002...12/30/01: the carafe for the coffeemaker cracked in various places; a new one was bought on 1/4/02...
...icy conditions on I-25 south to Socorro and I-40 near Gallup...12/26/01: semi overturned on I-40 near the Sixth ST exit; used the construction equipment at the Big I to remove the truck from the highway...
...SNOW in Buffalo! Lots of it!...two feet by Christmas, with additional amounts over a foot expected by the end of the week...well, by 12/28/01, 83 inches of snow had fallen; there is a state of emergency, and the entire city has shut down...the most immediate problem due to the snow is the collapsing of roofs...there have been three deaths, one the result of a collapsing carport...12/30/01: the mayor of Buffalo has been trying to get home since Thursday, 12/27/01...no driving until main streets are cleared, plus advising people to check furnaces to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning...12/31/01: schools will be closed until 1/4/02, and people are advised not to leave their homes...more snow is expected by the end of the first week in 2002...but the Olympic torch made its way to Buffalo on 1/1/02; it will arrive in New Mexico on 1/12/02 and stop at Santa Fe & Albuquerque...in a related snow event, there was a 51-car pile-up on I-80 near Loganton, PA; the cause: whiteout...8 people were killed as a result of a 100 car pileup, also on I-80...there were also serious accidents on I-81 & I-476... ...12/30/01: snow again, this time in the eastern mountains...there is a snow advisory for I-40 near Santa Rosa, as well as the area near Santa Fe & Chama...driving problems on I-40 from Carnuel to the TX border...12/31/01: a Winter Storm Watch for eastern NM, with rain in the southwest portion of the state...chance of 1-2 inches of snow in ABQ by New Year's Day...1/1/02: no snow in ABQ, but a Winter Snow Advisory for the Central, South & Southeast NM; Riudoso got 3-5 inches of new snow...Socorro received between 1-3 inches, dangerous driving on I-25 in that area...1/3/02: Taos was 2 below zero at 6:30 AM...a snow & rain mix may arrive in the area on 1/4/02...snow, and again lots of it has fallen from Louisiana to the Virginia tidewater area, and will continue until 1/4/02...Atlanta has 8 inches of snow, closing Hartsfield Airport...similar scenarios took place in Columbia, SC; Charlotte, NC & Norfolk, VA...Richmond, VA received 8 inches; while some areas in southeast VA recorded 16 inches...FL farmers fear that the frost will ruin their crops in the panhandle since temps plunged to 19 degrees...sadly, 10 people have died due to these wintry conditions, 2 in Atlanta itself...the weather will be warm in the South during the weekend with a chance of rain during the second week in January...1/4/02: received a snowburst in ABQ during the afternoon, then gone...but it left .5 inches of snow in the city and 2 inches in the foothills...Chama recorded 8 inches of snow; Cloudcroft, 10...1/7/02: over a foot of snow has fallen in New England; it is a slow storm and will continue for at least another day...NYC, Philly & DC will get a combination of rain, snow & sleet...1/10/02: winter snow advisory for the northern mountains over 7500 feet, possible 1-4 inches accumulation, and 2-5 inches in the Sangre de Christo range...driving will be hazardous on I-25 between Las Vegas to Raton...ABQ got a rain and snow mix; started in AM, ended by mid PM...school delays in Grants, Laguna & Moriarity...ice & fog in early AM due to below freezing temps...semi turned over on I-40, west of ABQ...bad driving on I-25 north to CO border, NM14 in the Madrid area and I-40 from Moriarity to Santa Rosa...7 inches of snow fell on Sandia Peak...

...1/13/02: Boston hit with 55 mph winds, causing the blowing & drifting of up to 2 feet of fallen snow...60-75 mph winds in the Great Plains' states...1/14/02: heavy snow expected in the Twin Cities, Chicago & Boston...1/17/02: in ABQ, 39 degrees at 6 AM, Santa Fe schools delayed due to snow & icy roads...Taos had 10 inches of snow; Santa Fe, 8...Winter Driving Advisory in northern NM, especially near Chama...snow in Kansas & New England...some snow in Chicago, but it has been a dry winter for that city...1/18/02: wind advisory in excess of 25 mph on I-25 from ABQ to the CO border...below zero weather in ND, SD, MN, IA & WI...1/19/02: heavy snow advisory in the Ohio Valley, 1-3"; 6+ inches in major East Coast cities, Boston to DC...Taos was minus 8 at 6:30 AM, with a wind chill of minus 19; Chama was minus 11, and 1 degree in Gallup...Santa Fe received an additional 8 inches of snow in the last 24 hrs.; Sandia Peak & Wolf Creek, 1" each...states and cities sent out hundreds of snowplows and salt spreaders onto highways Saturday as a fast-moving storm spread ice and up to a foot of snow along a path through the Appalachians toward the Northeast...winter storm warnings were posted for parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York...locally heavy snow blanketed West Virginia and some neighboring areas of Kentucky and Virginia during the morning...1/20/02: a High Wind Advisory for the Guadalupe mountains, with gusts exceeding 60 mph...in ABQ, could gust to 35 mph, but mostly from 10-20 mph...temps in some parts of Canada are minus 50...DC received 6" of snow; Philly, 4"; NYC, 3"; New England, up to 1'...

...who you gonna call? just don't call the IRS for answers; they are usually incorrect, after a caller has had to wait at least 4 minutes...there will be upgraded security at Times Square this year, including radiation detectors...explosion at fireworks store in Lima, Peru kills at least 276, the worst tragedy in 40 years, destroying 4 blocks of shops and an apartment complex...anthrax spores again found on a NYC mail sorting machine; poses no public threat...12/31/01: an extended four-day effort to kill trace amounts of anthrax spores from part of the closed Hart Senate Office Building was brought to an end Monday. Officials said they hope it is the last time they have to pour poisonous gas into the building that normally houses the offices of half the Senate's 100 members...the building, which as been closed since 10/12/01, is scheduled to reopen the second week in January, 2002...but, on 1/3/02, someone entered Sen. Daschle's office with a letter containing white powder; so far, it does not appear to be anthrax...then a NH teenager claimed to send letters laced with anthrax to Daschle, the NH DMV & 2 businesses...the white powder was actually talc...the boy has been seen by psychiatrists and has attended schools for special children...there is a company who sells hams that is recalling items from 4 states, claiming there may be nails in the meat...the year of 2001 ended with gas costing $1.01 per gallon in ABQ...there are continued thefts of US flags in the Duke City...on 1/1/02, a new logo appeared on the Albuquerque Journal...1/6/02: I-25 north of the city was shut down during the morning when a stolen Lexus smashed into an 18-wheeler...in ABQ, there has been a 200% increase in the number of meth labs in the city; 3 raids were made on Eubank (at a Days Inn which faces a funeral parlor!), Central & 98th STs...there has also been an increase in the number of rapes reported; 571 in 2001...

...as of 1/2/02, higher security measures will be in place at the Los Alamos National Labs...12/29/01: flood pipe broke at Mountain & Rio Grande in NW...Albuquerque is the number one city to have bounced back the quickest from the effects of the September eleventh attacks...at 6 AM MST on 12/31/01, viewed New Year's Day celebrations & fireworks from Sydney, Australia, with music played by the Opera House Orchestra...music by Enya is used in an advertisement for CNN & the American Spirit...

...Stocks fell on 12/31/01, a fitting end to the stock market's worst year in more than a quarter century...the DOW was 6% lower than last year; NASDAQ, 19% loss...Hint: they rose again on 1/2/02, and into 2002...

..money managers closed the books on a year marked by economic recession, shrinking interest rates, dwindling corporate profits, Wall Street job losses, and the Sept. 11 attacks that devastated the heart of New York's financial district...the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 115.49, or 1.1 percent, at 10,021.50. Broader stock indicators also fell. The Nasdaq composite index dropped 36.86, or 1.9 percent, to 1,950.40. For the year, the Dow dropped 7 percent, the Nasdaq lost 21 percent and the S&P fell 13 percent. The last time all three indexes fell for two consecutive years was in 1973 and 1974. (The Dow also dropped in 1977 and 1978, but the other indexes did not have a two-year losing streak.)

...who knew? the black-eyed pea became a New Year's symbol of good luck because it was the only successful Civil War crop of the South...green peas symbolized coins & greens represented paper money...

...and, as I close the door to the last quarter of 2001, I wonder what 2002 holds for the world...we have the war in Afghanistan, disagreements between Israel & Palestine, and escalating discord between India & Pakistan...there is moderate unemployment in America...a recession that may or may not be ending...the comedy of errors at airports with security detection devices...the threat of anthrax or other biological weapons...a new era of racial profiling...and the internal & external war on terrorism which may continue for a long period of time...Until later...Peace...Mike W...
