...8/1/02: heavy rains near home...some near UNM...saw thunder, but no lightning, then heard thunder with only a cloudy sky!...50+ mph winds during the night...brush fire at Lomas & Tramway, caused by lightning, quickly put out...8/2/02: in PM, very heavy rains on the east side of town; by late evening, downpours again...the monsoonal flow is expected again this weekend; late July & early August is also flash flood season...arroyo & small stream flood watch in ABQ issued several times during the day..this warning is repeated thru the weekend, as well as a flash flood warning fo the S part of NM, the mountains & the Rio Grande Valley...8/3/02: the atmosphere is almost 100% saturated...SunPort received .6" of rain, the heaviest single storm event since 1/1/02...Captain does not appreciate the sound of rain, nor the actual moisture itself...another .6" of rain fell, with a chance of rain every day for the first week of August...about 2" of rain fell in both Deming & Cedar Grove...8/4/02: one small T-storm in ABQ, mostly calm weather...same for 8/5/02, until the early evening (6 PM) when the sky opened up and the rain came down!...the temps remain in the 80s'...8/6/02: the morning had very dark skies, with lightning, thunder and small amounts of rain...after that, nada...in some parts of ABQ, rain caused the arroyos to fill quickly; two girls were trapped in the raging water but were saved...8/9/02: a quick storm with plenty of rain, then a return to sunshine...2 power outages in PM & early evening...flash floods closed parts of I-10 from Las Cruces to the AZ border...hot & dry weekend in ABQ...the same for 8/12/02; then the winds will go up while the temps go down...8/14/02: the weather remains hot & very dry through the weekend...fire danger is extremely high in northern NM...
...8/6/02: the Bosque re-opens to walkers, joggers & bikers (oh, my!)...8/9/02: small brush fire near Coors & Montano, easily put out...by the end of August, new signs will be erected in the tourist areas of the city, in order to provider tourists additional assistance & directions to local attractions...tourism is on the rise again in NM!...

...8/7/02: Mike had very painful stomach cramps all day as well as sharp pains in his back & neck...no amount of medications could decrease the pain...he went to bed right after work, and rested until the next morning...on 8/8/02: he felt better, but tired & hungry...what was it? a virus? the 24-hour bug?...
...steel bridge collapse over a shark tank, plunging 10 people into the water...fortune was on their side; the worse injury was minor bruises...ABQ & Los Cruces rank in the top 10 cities for Hispaniacs...8/8/02: VP Cheney attended a luncheon at the Wyndham in order to raise money to help elect Joe Sanchez as governor...8/7/02: around 9 PM man in a wheelchair stood up; and, armed with a shotgun, started firing it while in the parking lot of the UNM bookstore at Central & Cornell...he was asked to surrender; when he continued firing his weapon, the police shot & killed him...the reason for his rampage was not known...but, the family of the man fatally shot by police said they believe the shooting was his way of committing suicide...he had had a tough life & was in constant pain...the victim had rheumatoid arthritis, and was due to have surgery on his knee...

...8/10/02: Brad made wonderful potato salad, and grilled chicken (first on the B-B-Q; then, when the fire died, continued baking them in the stove)...8/9/02: comic book prices went up by 25 cents...8/14/02: Back to School for ABQ students...Brad dropped an ear ring into one of the bathroom sinks; then he did the same thing in the second sink...he retrieved the ear ring using a wrench, but needs a compound to reseal the pipes in the second sink; the original piece of jewelry (actually, a backing) was never found...and, once again, there may be a baseball strrrike at the end of this month or early next month...talks will continue until the middle of August; no strike date has been decided yet...United Airlines may be the next airline to belly up in bankruptcy...there is a new sign outside our front door indicating our apartment number; the number is also in Braille, the entire work of art is painted in the colors of the Southwest, complete with an adobe...8/18/02: Brad creates a wonderful stire-fried pork with cabbage, onions & peppers...

...the brown cloud over Asia...a three-km (two-mile) thick cloud of pollution shrouding southern Asia is threatening the lives of millions of people in the region and could have an impact much further afield, according to a United Nations study...it said the cloud, a toxic cocktail of ash, acids, aerosols & other particles, was damaging agriculture and changing rainfall patterns across a region stretching from from Afghanistan to Sri Lanka...many were at risk from drought & flooding as rainfall patterns were radically altered, with dire implications for global economic growth and health...
..8/17/02: the family of the 4 tourists from Nebraska who died on I-40 as a result of a drunk driver for the BIA have filed a $100 million lawsuit against the Federal Govt....the person who caused the Jan., 2002 crash was also driving in the wrong direction...and, 9 previous drunk driver arrests had been removed from his record due to persuasion of the BIA on the MDV because the man needed a license in order to do his job...now, all drivers will be periodically tested, and there will be a zero tolerence policy in effect...the guilty man will serve 20 years in jail...
