...the man charged with killing his son's hockey coach claims self defense and regrets his actions...the trial was held in Cambridge, MA; the man, Thomas Junta, is accused of causing severe bleeding to the brain & spinal column of his victim, Michael Costin...if found guilty, Mr. Junta, a truck driver, will be sent to jail for 20 years...his son said that the coach was hitting his father, but both the son & a bystander told Mr. Junta to stop, but he did not...the victim weighed 100 pounds less than Mr. Junta, who was described as a friendly giant, both have several children...1/10/02: closing arguments were heard on the case; the jury consisted of 9 women & 3 men...1/11/02: convicted of involuntary manslaughter; scheduled to be sentenced on 1/25/02, but the prison term will be reduced since this is his first offense...he has two children, 12 & 17 years old...1/13/02: in a separate incident, a boy dies after a wrestling match during which he had been in a headlock...1/19/02: in Ontario, CA boy dies after running track, could not be revived by school personnel or ambulance crew...

...the METRO in DC is preparing their stations to detect & handle an anthrax or smallpox biological attack; the cost is $15 million...two unnamed downtown subway stations will test these preparations, which will eventually will be used in other major US cities...retailers predict the smallest increase in sales in over a decade...during the weekend after Christmas, Ocean's 11 earned $17 million; Ali, $15 million...the trend in movies is aiming towards escape & fantasy, as shown in the sucess of Shreck & Monsters, Inc....the Super Bowl & Mardi Gras will be held at the same time!...Queen Elizabeth II included her sorrow regarding the September attacks; holiday masses will be held for the victims at St. Paul's Cathedral & Westminster Abbey...the ship of the same name started on a world tour...12/31/01: a platform to view the remains of the World Trade Center was open to the public...patriotic songs became very popular during the last quarter of 2001, in all types of music sung by a variety of people...1/8/02: Dave Thomas of Wendy's died, 69, suffered from kidney & heart problems...his cause of death was liver cancer...the business was named after one of his daughters...

...1/5/02: a small plane with a 15-year old student pilot took off without permission Saturday and crashed into a Tampa skyscraper after the pilot ignored a Coast Guard helicopter's signals to land, authorities said...despite early indications that the crash wasn't terror-related, the televised image of a plane blasting a hole in the side of a skyscraper was a chilling reminder of the World Trade Center attacks. The plane's tail dangled near the 20th floor of the 40-story Bank of America building, it actually was lodged between the 28th & 29th floors. The media is calling him the Kamakazi Kid...he is Charles Bishop, a 15-year old who referred to himself as a Patriot...the media has called him a disturbed young man, sympathetic to both bin Laden & the al-Qaeda...the boy wanted to join the Air Force, and was a loner...he flew over McDill AFB restricted air space, and nearly collided with a jet taking off from the Tampa airport...the FBI is investigating E-mails sent from the boy's PC as well as accessed web sites...

...during that same day & near the same time there were similar crashes in CA, CO, LA & Puerto Rico. The FBI does not believe that any of these were terrorist attacks...

...1/10/02: a small airplane makes a hard landing near Purgatory, CO...a helicopter from Kirkland AFB is sent to rescue the passengers, but it also makes a hard landing...a second helicopter comes to the rescue...no serious injuries in either of the crashes, or that of another plane that went down in the Taylor Ridge area of ABQ that same day!...



..1/9/02: A U.S. military plane carrying at least seven Marines crashed into a mountain in Pakistan Wednesday night. There were no initial signs of survivors.

President Bush said the crash was a reminder of ''how serious the times are today.'',Bush said at a fund-raiser for the re-election of his brother Jeb as governor of Florida. ''But I want to remind them that the cause that we are now engaged in is just and noble. The cause is freedom and this nation will not rest until we've achieved our objective.''

At the Pentagon, officials said there were no initial indications that anyone survived but they could not rule it out. They also said there were no signs that the plane was brought down by hostile action. Other military officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the plane was carrying a crew of six and one passenger - all Marines. Witnesses reported seeing flames shooting from the plane before it slammed into the mountain...he first female killed in this war, Jeanette L Winters, was from Gary, IN...18 soldiers have died since the beginning of this war...

...1/16/02: a man was detained at Heathrow Airport for attempting to carry a knife, pliers & screwdriver past security on a London to Seattle flight...on 1/19/02, a Virgin Airlines Flight 27 from London to Orlando, FL was diverted to Iceland because of a possible bomb threat...the message was written on a bathroom window as well as threats against the US; it turned out to be a hoax...by 1/18/02, all airlines have to examine every piece of luggage, causing delays of delays...with the addition of more screening machines, costing $1 million, this will be added to the ticket, and will have to be paid even if you are using Frequent Flyer miles...there will also be a $2.50 fee for the cabin door modifications to protect the pilot & crew from terrorists...in ABQ, the devices have been installed during the week prior to the start date...tips for passengers are: don't overpack, have ID(s) ready, and allow 2 hour arrival prior to flight time...there will be zero tolerence, bags will be checked by machines people or dogs!...example: 1.3 billion bags pass through Hartsfield in ATL...previously, 7-10% of luggage screened...air travel is down 14% from Jan., 2001...however, there is no organized system to enforce security...bags are checked on the initial flight, not when a passenger transfers to another plane...since the September attacks, there has been a anti-terrorism air patrol over the skies of NYC & DC, considered sensative areas, every day...there are 11,000 pilots flying 2-6 hrs. per session, using 250 planes...there have been 13,000 missions, costing $324 million...due to the costs, limits may be placed on these patrols...

...248,000 jobs were directly lost because of the events that occured on September 11...but, in all, 1.6 million people became unemployed, directly and/or indirectly, because of the ripple effect of these attacks...analysts predict that these jobs will eventually be needed again...Las Vegas was hit the worse regarding tourism; New York, for actual business activity...
