Pearl Harbor...the first 'day of infamy' in modern American history!

...Unemployment! 15,000 more jobs lost in November, the total exceeds 800,000 people, the highest in 2 decades...yet Americans are still being told to spend money as their patriotic duty to boost the economy...but unemployed people have no money to spend!...

12/07/01: the Federal Reserve building received 600 pieces of mail tainted with anthrax...there was an anthrax scare on 75,000 PSAT test papers...NJ workers bought the Christmas tree for Ground Zero; it was originally to have stood on the Prudential building...JFK airport evacuated for 4 hours when a knife was found on the ground near a security checkpoint (see below for more events)...NM teacher will not be able to work due to his comment that anyone who can bomb the Pentagon gets his vote...the volcano Popocatpetl erupted near Mexico City, spreading ash but posing no threat to civilians so far...12/20/01: a second eruption; 40,000 people were evacuated, no injuries so far...it is now beleived that on 09/11/01 some highjackers did not know they were on a suicide mission...
One should forgive one's enemies, but not before they are hanged!

...bin Laden is referred to as a tall man on horseback, per the al-Qaeda...6,000 Taliban fighters disarm & surrender at the Uzbec border...but, a major Afghan tribal chief defects to the Taliban...12/08/01: the Afghan prime minister demands the capture of bin Laden & Omar...he has demanded a country-wide alert for the capture of both men...Omar is believed to be injured and is heading for Tora Bora...intelligence reports indicate that bin Laden and his inner circle plus Omar have fled to Pakistan, others say they are not, putting them in Tora Bora...Marines have blocked all routes out of Kandahar...they are encountering al-Qaeda pocket of resistence near Tora Bora, their last outpost, which currently looks like the lunar surface...the al-Qaeda will fight to the death...more American troops may be needed...the Senate approved the Congressional defense bill...Freedom Bridge between Pakistan & Afghanistan reopens, supplies can now be delivered to the war torn country...additional suicide bombs rock Palestine...the same occurs in Israel; 29 people killed in an explosion at a Haifa bus stop...Arafat is in no mood to continue peace talks, and Israel will keep attacking the terrorists...Israel has severed all diplomatic ties with Palestine...John Walker from CA, who went to Afghanistan 6 months ago and joined the al-Qaeda, is providing info; he will be tried in a military court (as of 12/09/01), and is being treated as a POW...he apologized to his family for not contacting them sooner, and had been detained at Camp Rhino in southern Afghanistan, and states that Phase 2, a biological attack on the US by the al-Qaeda, will occur after Ramadan, which ends 12/16/01...these plans may already be in motion...he has since been relocated to a military ship off the coast of Pakistan, and may be tried for treason...

...Colin Powell is in Moscow discussing an arms deal with President Putin, who calls the ABM treaty a cornerstone in world security...however, the US wants to withdraw...

...an 8,000 foot burrito was created on 12/08/01 at Bruno's Restaurant in Cuba, NM that includes a U-turn because of its size; the length is larger than the population...it weighs a ton, and was displayed on US 550, overshadowing the road's new improvements (widening) which were completed that week, it also has 2500 pounds of beans...get ready for some fireworks!...lowest gas price (79 cents) found near Atlanta; the average price has dropped 40 cents since 09/11/01...Ocean's 11 beats Harry Potter at the box office during the weekend of 12/07/01...bears that had been roaming in back yards of homes in north & western New Mexico looking for food have been captured, sedated, tagged & moved north of Espanola on US 285, to the wilderness area near Tres Piedres...AMEX will lay off 13,000+ employees by the end of the year...69 security workers at the Salt Lake City airport are fired for falsifying data on their applications...exitting off I-25 south of Santa Fe in order to gather New Mexico sand for Brad's Japanese garden...during the weekend of 12/07/01 robbers stole most of the toys from the Salvation Army building in Santa Fe; however, they have received enough donations to distribute toys to all the needy children...companies are trying to make up for the loss by donating toys or making monetary contributions...3.9 quake on 12/14/01 in the San Fernando Valley, near LA...Aetna will lay off 6,000 workers; McGraw Hill, 925...consumer prices up 0.4%; this is not a time of inflation...Bell South predicts a 12% loss in the first quarter of 2002...there is also a decrease in business for ad agencies...the climates of US & Europe are getting warmer; heating costs go down, but so does the purchase of winter clothing items...a boat Xmas parade was held at Miami...

...12/11/01: 8:46 AM EST; the time the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center north tower...memorial services are held in NYC, DC, the Pentagon & London as well as 43 other nations...people from 83 countries died in the attacks; countries who were not directly affected by the attacks also pause for a moment of silent reflection, including the space station team of Russians & Americans...electronic billboards on Times Square displayed patriotic messages...Jeremy Glick on Flight 93 may have prevented the destruction of the White House by casuing the plane to crash in PA...by the end of 2001, 2,937 were estimated to be dead at Ground Zero; the buildings had basements that went 70 feet below the ground...the descrepancies from the original 6,700 total are linked to pople listed twice, international consulates overestimating losses, and people not telling authorities when survivors were found...1,000 people are still working in the rescue effort...currently in 2002, the number of WTC victims has been reduced to 2,873 (1/27/02)...the US may next focus on Somalia...

...12/11/01: snow in Albuquerque! starting at 1 AM, about an inch fell...actually saw snow falling at 6:30 AM, but was not sticking to the roadway, although they were slippery; temperatures in the mid-30's...this was the second of a series (the first provided lots of wind), with the third arriving by the weekend...over a foot has fallen in the northwest section...I-40 will be hazardous driving heading west to Gallup...winter snow watches, warnings & advisories are in effect for various parts of the state...12/12/01: SNOW! I-40 closed from the NM/AZ border to Central AVE in ABQ, reopened at 6:40 AM...also dangerous is the fog & black ice...there was a 5 car & 1 semi accident on I-40 west of ABQ, only minor injuries...on I-40 east of ABQ, a 1 car & 1 semi accident near Moriarity; again, no fatalities...I-25 down to one lane near the Isleta Casino...lots of snow in the higher mountains, including Sandia Peak...12/12/01: unpredicted snow started again in the afternoon; it was short lived, but covered the trees & grasses...12/13/01: Taos has 28 inches; Santa Fe, 12 & Sandia Peak, 8...at 6:30 it was 5 below zero in Gallup...the worst intersection was Paseo del Norte & Wyoming...the flyover ramps of the Big I were slippery...all NM ski resorts will be open by the weekend of 12/14/01...12/17/01: one below zero in Durango...snow fell in Winslow & Flagstaff, AZ and Las Vegas, NV...

...Motorola will cut 9400 jobs, making a total of 50,000 people let go in the last year and a half, shares are down by 18%...however, GE & Pfeizer stock are gaining in value; DELL has increased by 59%...Tyson industries is charged with transporting immigrants illegally to work in their US factories...Radio Shack will be closing 35 stores...some financial companies have reported earnings...then there is the AT&T/Comcast merger at a cost of $72 billion!...for the second month the US has a deficit, now standing at $54.3 billion!...4 of 20 Osprey planes, VTOLs', have crashed; each costs $90 million...
